Bring Back the Bear
I have to agree with the other reviews I read on this book. The Fourteen Bears is a wonderful children's story. When I was little it was my favorite book and I remember spending hours gazing at the pages and imagining that I lived in one of the hollow trees. I am lucky that my mother save this book for me and I am now able to read it to my daugthers. I went online tonight because I had hoped to puchase a new copy as mine is yellowed and torn. I hope Golden Books republishes this book in the near future.

The most memorable and enchanting book I read as a child!
How I loved this book as a child! It had such beautiful and detailed pictures. Not only did it take you through the wonderful story written on it's pages, but you could dream for hours of other stories the bears must have lived through! For the longest time, I couldn't remember the name of this wonderful book, and now I find that it is out of print. What a tragedy! All children (young and old) should be able to transport themselves through these pages into the bear's wonderful homes. I had so hoped I could find this book to share with my daughter! I just hope the publisher will realize what a classic this book is and republish it.

Golden Books PLEASE reprint the Fourteen Bears!
What a great memory from childhood. The story and illustrations will stay with you for a lifetime. I havn't seen a copy since elementary school but I can still remember the bears in their treehouses and skating on their pond and playing in the Sun. I can't say enough about the book. I hope Golden books reprints it soon so I can buy it for my daughter and my seventeen neices and nephews. It is a classic book that every child should have. My hats off to Evelyn Scott and Virginia Parsons for putting together such a great book.

Big Hungry Bear: Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and

So amusing!
"The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear" is about an adorable mouse who has just picked a strawberry and is warned about the big, hungry bear who loves red, ripe strawberries [especially ones that have just been picked] and will stop at nothing to find one. The rest of the story is of the little mouse trying his best to hide the strawberry from the bear, doing such things as burying it and disguising it. But his decision of what to do with it in the end is great.

This is such a cute and funny book! It is also easy to read for young children. The illustrations are wonderful, too. Very colorful and vivid. Highly recommended for kids 2-6.

A Must Have for Parents of Toddlers
Someone gave us this book when our oldest son was born. We had a rather rough time getting him interested in books and one day when he was about 28 months old I got this book out (I'd been saving it) and he actually sat still long enough for the whole story. That was what finally gave him an interest in books. He soon had the book memorized and had something funny to say at every page. Now our 18-month old son brings this book to me at least three times a day and enjoys it as much as his brother did (whose main interest is now Winnie-the-Pooh books). I enjoy reading it myself; it doesn't bore me to read it over and over like some children's books because there are so many different things in the illustrations that you can point out something new to your child every time you read it. I recommend this book for any new parents.

Hello Little Mouse. What Are You Doing?
What's a little, strawberry loving mouse going to do to keep a big, hungry, strawberry loving bear from eating his fruit? Especially when "the big, hungry Bear can smell a red, ripe strawberry a mile away..." Well, with a little clever help from the reader, this turns out to be an easy problem to solve..... Don and Audrey Wood have authored an entertaining, interactive treasure that's sure to charm and delight kids from 1 to 91. Their simple text is joyous and engaging, But this is really a story told through the marvelous illustrations. Mr Wood's bold, bright, and amusing artwork stars a most endearing little furry friend, and youngsters will love all the captivating facial expressions and wonderful, humorous detail in each two page spread. The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, And The Big Hungry Bear is a masterpiece little ones will beg to read again and again, and a timeless classic to share with friends, family, and future generations.

Excellent Books!!! I've read the whole series 6 or 7 times!!
The best series of books I've ever read. I can't wait until the 5th book comes out - hurry hurry please!!

Entire series wonderful, WHEN will the 5th book be out?
Have read all Jean Auel's books in the Earths Children series. I could not put them down. Please tell me when the 5th book will be out!

Best series I've ever read
A wonderful, well-written series. I've read these books several times through, just dying for the next one to come out. The characters are captivating and Auel draws you into their lives so vividly you don't want to put the book down. The history and story-line are so well researched it's sometimes hard to imagine you're reading fiction. When the fifth in the series does come out, I will reread each and every of the previous books in order to capture the full beauty and richness of Ayla and Jondular's lives once again. I just wish the author would finish the next segment.

Sweet Smell of Christmas

MY MOST MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS BOOK
The "Sweet Smell of Christmas" is a childhood book that has left a wonderful mark on my Christmas memories. My mother still has my copy and is now sharing it with my 3 year old son. Even though the "smells" exist only in the immagination now, my son still breathes in each page with a "MMMmmm". It was a shame when my mother went to find a new copy for my son and found it out of print. (She did call the publisher and express her dissapointment.) She fortunately found a copy for my son, but hopes to see this book in stores again. It is the best Christmas book!

Sweet Smell of Christmas
I was so disappointed when I learned that this wonderful book is no longer available. My two boys (31 and 26 now) each received one when they were little and it was read many, many times and sniffed until it could be sniffed no more! I still have their copies and use one of them to read to preschoolers at the school where I am a Media Specialist. The children of today love it just as much as those of 30 years ago. I would love to be able to buy this book again so that I can give a copy to their children when they come along. Please Goldengraft, consider reissuing this wonderful book so another generation of boys and girls can smell the apple pie, the candy canes and all the other wonderful Sweet Smells of Christmas.

Christmas tradition!
The Sweet Smell of Christmas was a tradition in our house while I was growing up! I could smell the pine as we opened the Christmas boxes from the attic. It's a terrific book depicting a little bear experiencing Christmas through his nose! You can smell the gingerbread as his mom bakes them, the pine of the treee while it's being cut, and the zest of the orange left in his stocking! He gets SO excited about Christmas, it is sure to spark excitment in any child, while engaging their sense of smell. PLEASE bring this wonderful tradition back to print so I can continue it with my family!

Whimsical, Delightful, A Joy !
One of my all-time favorites for children aged four months to 2 1/2 years! The youngest will enjoy the enthusiastic alliterative rhyming and the bright colors; toddlers (and adults!) will also enjoy the clever pictorial links between each page (preparations for fireworks are shown in the corner of one page; delightfully exploding berries on the next).

I don't know whether this book is more fun for the reader or the listener ("Raspberry/Jazzberry/ Razzamatazzberry/ Berryband/Merryband/Jamming in Berryland"), but it will fast become a favorite for you and a child! An enchanting tale, beautifully told: A perfect gift!

Wonderful cadence!
This is a wonderful little book. My 7-month old loves it. I started reading to him from birth. The hardcover pages make it a perfect size for little hands. He looks forward to our reading Jamberry. The author was so creative and the rhyming is wonderful. It's a fun book to read outloud to my son! I also recommend Sheep in a Jeep and Sweet Dreams, Ted. They, along with Jamberry, are his favorites! Pick yours up today as a gift or for your own little baby or toddler.

Great Fun! One of the Best Children's Book Around!

Don't Believe the Editor's Review!
I've been moved to write my own review so others can read this instead of the surprisingly negative editor's review on this wonderful book. I am a new mother and have a 5 month old daughter. As I stood in the book store flipping through each page, I could not hold back some little tears. Yes, some of the rymn does not work 'perfectly', but it doesn't matter. The pictures are wonderful, and it sums up some very deep emotions with very simple words. I now know what other mothers meant when they used to tell me, 'You just can't describe the love you feel for your child...there is nothing else in the world like it..' Now I know. I bought this book so I can read it to my baby now and for the rest of her life! A little dramatic, I know, but this book deserves a better review. Enjoy this book with your little one too.

If you read ONE book to your child it should be this one!!!
I am totally and utterly disgusted with the publishers weekly review above. My mother bought me this book for my 3 year old. We both wept after reading it. My daughter LOVES the book. After reading it the first time she walked around asking everyone, "am I your giggle?". When we would reply, "well of course", she would run around giggling! Because we both get so excited about reading this book we now have put this book in her "special" book pile that contains now only 4 books, all her most favorites. I NEVER get tired of reading this book to her because it conveys exactly how I feel about her, in her way of understanding. My 6 month old son also likes to listen to us reading it, he gets excited because his sister laughs at every page. With each page she asks, "am I your wild?" or "am I your wiggle?", and so on. I can't wait for him to be old enough to understand the words and the message, "YOU ARE MY I LOVE YOU".

Sweet...loving...wonderful book for all
I purchased this book for Christmas for my 22 month old daughter and like others, cried the first time I read it. During Christmas, I was overheard reading it to my child by her grandparents, and they too, stood there with tears in their eyes saying it was the sweetest book they have heard. Please do not listen to the Publisher's Weekly review...it is quite obvious the person who gave such a negative review does not have children. My daughter sat still while I read it as rhyming kept her attention as well as the day-to-day activities of the bear were similar to hers. This is a book to be treasured!

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See
Published in Paperback by HBJ College & School Division (June, 1993)
Author: Martin
Average review score:

Your kid will love it. Will you?
I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I love it because my son loves it. He is two and a half. He has loved it for a year--really loved it. Every time we go to the library he makes a bee-line for it. We sit and read it. More often than not we will attract other toddlers who will surround us and recite the text along with us. It casts some sort of spell on small children, I think. I do not own this book, however, because I HATE it. It is so repetitive that I wince as I read it. In fact, one does not read it so much as one chants it. The brown bear mantra. My son has the entire text memorized. We'll be in the grocery store or in the car and he'll start reciting it. Or I'll chant part of it and he'll chant the rest. Or we'll ad lib, inventing new animals with new colors: "Grey Mouse, Grey Mouse, What do you see?" I guess I don't really HATE this book; it's hard to hate something that gives you so much pleasure. But I'm not ready to own it yet. That said, I can't wait for my brother to have a child. He sent my son a noisy Thomas the Tank Engine book for Christmas. It beeped and whistled and hooted and basically drove me out of my mind. I intend to pay him back with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See".

a classic
I remember loving this book as a child, and reading this to my six-month-old son brought back wonderful memories. Yes, there's a simplistic theme running through the pages, but a young child listens for the repetitive phrase and looks for the big, colorful images. My son gets very excited each time I read the book to him, reaching for each of the animals as the page turns; and as he gets older and can comprehend the pictures better, I'm sure he'll appreciate Martin and Carle's work as much as I did.

I highly recommend this delightful book.

Another Classic From Carle
I've had three children who fell in love with this book around age two. It does a wonderful job of teaching colors, animals and rhyme to toddlers.

Aided by Carle's unique illustrations, this book begs to be chanted by the parent who will be reading it for the umpteenth time. ("Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me. Red bird, red bird, what do you see? I see a ....." etc., etc.) The cadence and rhythm of the words have fascinated my youngsters as they learn to identify different colored animals populating the pages of the book. Strictly a teaching tool, the book does not have a story per se, but it seems to be just right for the child who is just beginning to discover the larger world.

I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years 1933-1941
Published in Paperback by Modern Library (November, 1999)
Authors: Victor Klemperer and Martin Chalmers
Average review score:

KLEMPERER BRINGS TO LIFE NAZI HORRORS
I was terrified by the world that Victor Klemperer brings to life in " I Will Bear Witness ". The diary is a day by day account of a slow descent into the bowels of Hell. In the beginning the reader is pulled into Klemperers mostly mundane day to day life. Klemperer was a well respected and much published professor of Romance Languages at the University of Dresden. As well he was a decorated veteran of World War I. Slowly, starting with Hitlers rise to power in 1933, his entire world is turned inside out. Day by day the situation becomes more strained. Year by year the situation becomes more dangerous. But the brave hearted Klemperers stay on in Germany because they are German and can imagine no other life. I was greatly moved by the scenes that were brought to life by Klemperer. The description of the first household search they were subjected to caused goose bumps to run up my spine. In addition, the narrative of his 8 day imprisonment ( cell 89 ) is in my opinion a classic that will belongs to the ages. His ability to to draw a picture and capture the mood of a situation was truly amazing. I cannot say enough about the courage of the Klemperers as they fought everyday to hold onto their dignity, pride and finally their lives. Thanks to the skill and courage of Professor Klemperer I now have, in some small way, an idea of what the day to day horror of Nazi Germany was like for the persecuted.

Mandatory for those interested in German/Jewish history.
This is the most compelling book I have ever read on the subject of the destruction of the German Jewish community. Compelling because the author wrote for himself, with candor and without artifice, about his daily experiences, hopes and fears. I recommend strongly that you buy this book. If you do, you will find yourself, as I did, caught up in the daily life of a German professor who cast aside his Jewish heritage in favor of German culture, only to find, in the end, that his treasured homeland still considered him a Jew by race. I only regret, at the time of my writing this, that the second volume is not yet available. Of all the books I have read on the Holocaust, this one will live forever in my mind, because reading his diary was like living his experience.

Klemperer's "Diary" is great literature at it's best!
Discovering Victor Klemperer's "Diary" is like finding the missing link. It helps to fill in the gaps in our understanding of the German society that became crazy and the Jewish victims who experienced it. Volume I of the Diary, written and edited in journalistic style, gives a dramatic account of the day to day life of a Jewish Professor during the Hitler years. It reveals an all too human, noble, but flawed, character who undergoes dramatic development as the story progresses. The backdrop of historical events turns the Diary into a page-turning thriller. If we consider this true story to be a novel, we can identify with the protagonist, caught in the plot of history; it is great literature at it's best. As documented history, it gives invaluable insight into the holocaust. Every intelligent person will want read it.

Stan Weinstein's Secrets For Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 January, 1992)
Author: Stan Weinstein
Average review score:

A big profit maker
To anyone who wants to beat the market and improve their success rate by learning and using Technical Analysis this book is a gauranteed way to get started. Its written in simple terms, has excelent examples and offers advice based on time-proven methods. Compared to other similar tomes on this subject it uses no math or formulas but relies on actual charts of stocks. The method teaches how to view price, volume and trend data so that stock picks yield winners 60 to 80% of the time and with gains (for me) 2x to 10x! It also provides lessons on the how to cut losses and how to learn the discipline of selling for maximum profit. This is a book which can (and must) be reread over and over as one gains expertise at Technical Analysis. The methods learned provide logical procedures which eliminate the hype of the stock market and turns the hype into profits. Weinstein's motto of the "Tape Tells All" is the foundation for success because it places stock action as the primary source of information over OPINION.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
In the past 6 months, I have bought and read over 15 books on trading and investment (Van Tharp, LeBeau, Nison, Oz, O'Neill, Murphy) and this is by far one of the best books out there. At first, I was reluctant to purchase this book based on the date of publication (Pre 1990). But, as other great trading books, this one is a classic that should be in every library of technical investors/traders at an extremely affordable price.

Key points:
- Very practical, systematic and clear. Excellent communication. You don't get bored reading it.
- Sound trading system.
- Stan's stage analysis is a tremendous help to separate the stock price movement in stages. Very valuable insight.
- His stop loss explanation on both and long are extremely valuable and clear. He explained it in a step-by-step fashion. This alone can save you $$$ by locking-in your profit.
- Other excellent explanation: important chart patterns to be considered (he only selects the best ones), volume analysis, importance of Relative Strength and moving averages. What to buy, When to Buy, When to Sell, How to Short....And he separated those key processes between Traders and Investors. So, you will have a clear understanding of what to do. A step by step explanation on how you can find the A+ stocks using his "Forest to Trees" approach.
- Excellent Quiz & Answers and the end of each chapter that tremendously re-test you understanding of the important concepts.

If you're a beginner or intermediate, this book will certainly give you a huge boost in mastering chart reading as well as execution. Unlike any books that sort of short in explaining one critical area, I find Stan's book very clear and entertaining as well. It opens your eyes on what to look for in a chart.

Highly recommended!

An outstanding text on investing
The author's investment philosophy is based on the view that nearly all stocks experience four price stages:accumulation(stage 1), uptrending (stage 2), top area (stage 3), and downtrending (stage 4). Therefore, an investor, he says, has a high probability of success if he or she enters the cycle just before the stock moves to stage 2. Then he explains how to select a stock by simply studying its price/volume chart and how to time your entry. He addresses the issue of fundamental vs technical analysis. He explains that technical analysis is much superior over fundamental analysis because technical analysis incorporates future information that is not available to the average investor on a timely basis.
I found the book very clear and very helpful in selecting winning stocks with less stress. I read several books but this one is the best of them all.

Corduroy
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (May, 1976)
Average review score:

Corduroy
Corduroy, written in 1968 by Don Freeman, is a great book for children who are just learning to read up to those children in 4th or 5th grade. I myself enjoy this book to this day and I am in 8th grade. How could someone not like this book about a furry and lonely little bear looking for a home. This story is a classic, it has been told to many children and I would strongly recommend it to a parent looking for beginning books for their child.

Corduroy is about a stuffed bear that lives in a warehouse who is missing a button. One night he searches for the button, but he does not find it so he goes to sleep. The next day he wakes to find that a girl has come to get him and he is finally given a home. Throughout the story you get a since of warmth and love and it makes you feel better. This book is also a challenging read for the younger children out there and is a great way to help beginning readers learn how to read quicker. Corduroy is in my opinion the best children's book that I have ever read, if you are a parnet looking for a great book for your child, or if you are a child looking for a great book, Corduroy is definitely one that you won't want to pass up.

Sare's Review
Corduroy is the story of a cute brown bear who lived in the toy department of a big store. Each day he would wait for a child to come along and buy him and take him home. Each day the store was filled with people buying all sorts of things, but no one ever seemed to want the small bear in green overalls, because him overalls were missing a button. One morning a little girl came up to Corduroy and told her mom that he was the bear she had always wanted. The mother told the girl not today, and that he doesn't look new because he's missing a button. That night, Corduroy decides to take an adventure and search the store for his missing button. A night guard find's him though, and returns him to the toy department. The next day the little girl returns for Corduroy. She brings all the money from her piggy bank and buys Corduroy. When she return's home, she sews Corduroy on a new button. I recommend reading Corduroy, it is a classic children's story that everyone should hear at least once in their life.

I¿ve Always Wanted A Good Toddler Story
Did the screenwriters of the recently released "Bridget Jones' Diary" lift Colin Firth's line "I like you just the way you are" from this wonderful 1968 kids' book (see the penultimate page's "I like you the way you are")? Well, probably not...but in both instances it's a very effective and heartfelt line, capturing the essence of unconditional, lasting love.

Corduroy is a cute little stuffed bear who nobody wants to buy: There are bigger and newer toys, and besides, the button is missing from one strap of his overalls. Only Lisa shows interest that day, but her mother hesitates and they leave without him. While looking for the button after the store closes, Corduroy experiences the wonders of a big department store: The elevator and the new beds lined in rows: "This must be a palace...I guess I've always wanted to live in a palace."

Lisa returns the next day and buys him with her own money, and the sugarcoated ending strikes up just the right amount of sentiment without becoming overbearing (no pun intended). "This must be home," he [Corduroy] said. "I know I've always wanted a home!" And then: "You must be a friend," said Corduroy. "I've always wanted a friend." "Me too!" said Lisa, and gave him a big hug. Powerful, misty-eye making stuff! Beautiful simple color pictures, and 28 pages of adventure and sweet love. Awwww-inspiring (pun intended). Highly recommended for the toddler set!
